Copper vs brass

Two metals, five patinas each.

Copper is the warmer, more orange-toned metal. Brass is the yellower, cooler alloy. Both are living metals that darken naturally with use and both are fabricated in heavy gauge sheet in our Addison shop.

Order a sample pack ($50) to touch the brushed, matte, and three patina finishes before spec'ing a hood. Refinishing services are available if you want to reset the surface after years of use.

  • Brushed, matte, light, medium, and dark patinas
  • Refinishable in the shop later
  • Heavy gauge for durability and rigidity
  • Mixed material builds (brass on stainless, copper trim) available

Common questions

Copper. It warms and darkens sooner because the base metal is more reactive. Brass patinates more slowly and evenly.
Yes. Mixed-material trim, banding, and rivets are a common CMH detail. We spec the combination in your CAD drawing.
For a range hood surface (above the cooking area) both are appropriate. For food-contact counters and prep surfaces we recommend 304 stainless. Check with us on your specific use.
Both metals darken and deepen gradually with use. Water contact, cleaning, and touch all affect the patina. A dark-patina finish arrives already close to its long-term color.
